The original Tiger (10.4) which was installed on 1st gen Mac Pros won't make itI recently made some upgrades on my mac pro and I am running into what seem to be graphic card failures.

Last thing: you need a recent Mac OS version. )Īlso, the card needs 2 power cables (included in the kit), but you should know it if you already have other PCI-E cards that need additional power (there are only 2 power connectors inside the Mac Pro). So far, this card was both quieter and more powerful than the previous cards I had (X1900XT, then 8800GT, then 3870, all of them fried. The PCI bus is 16x, whereas it would be a 32x on a modern Mac Pro, but I've been told that it wouldn't make a big difference. The card is 2 slots high and is inserted on the bottom slot (the graphic card slot). I have a MacPro1,1 (667 MHz bus), with a 4870 installed and I can tell you that it works great (this cards means you now have 1 DVI port and 1 mini DisplayPort. PCI Express 1.0 and 2.0 have the same connector. [MacSales claims the Mac version of the ATI 4870 works in 800mhz bus but NOT the 667 mhz bus (Current NV cards also have the same problem as the 8800 in that they only work in 64-bit EFI Mac Pros, but unlike the 8800, there are no options to get 32-bit capable versions.)

8800 works in both first-gen and current-gen, but you must pick the proper card since they don't use EFI Byte Code (unlike ATI).

Nvidia - 7300 only works in first-gen Mac Pro. ATI uses EFI byte code to accomplish this, and I love them for it. The video card landscape for the Mac Pro looks pretty much like this:ĪTI - all cards work on all Mac Pro variations (so far), regardless of EFI 32/64 bitness.

The 7300 only worked in the first-gen Mac Pro (due to EFI issues), and it was a crap card to begin with. Why do you need a 7300GT, you already have one? Is yours failing? I have a pulled 7300GT, came out of my machine a few weeks after I got my 1900XT and subsequent 8800GT, which is practically brand new which I would sell you for half that if you want it.Įxactly right. $200?!? That's crazy for a POS card like that. Here is an interesting web page on the step by step process of flashing a 4870: So far going from 2gb to 6 gb of memory seems to have given me a speed pump with only a minimable amount of effort on my part. My advice to anyone considering flashing is to really do your research and take some time planning before doing the actual installation. And I don't want to fry a computer that works perfectly fine just for a speed boost. If the 4870 has PCE Express 2 then how do I adapt it to work on PCE Express and how much of a speed hit do I take?įor all the money I paid Apple I shouldn't have to waste my time going through this bullshit. PCI-E version or speed is not an issue, but 32bits/64bits is an issue for NVidia cards. For flashing, you need either a second computer or a second graphic card, and you must usually boot with Windows/DOS. Slot cooler is useless, unless you have a very noisy card (8800 is quiet, 4870 is near silent, 3870 is louder).

Otherwise, there are different hacks involving PC graphic cards, mostly Radeons, flashed or not, and hacked drivers, which work more or less (for instance, there will be no display output before the OS boots).ĮDIT: There's also, if you can find it, an ATI-sold Radeon HD 3870 Mac Edition, that would work. If you want performance and security, this is the best choice. The expensive Apple-sold Radeon HD 4870 works without problem in older Mac Pro, even if Apple says it doesn't.

Flashing is a possibility, but there's always the risk to brick the card (and it's even trickier if you want to flash a PC 8800 GT because there are different versions with different ROM sizes). GeForce 8800 GT is hard to find, and there are indeed two different versions, one for older Mac Pro (32 bits) and one for current Mac Pro (64 bits).
